Sentinel Skate Park

Envirochild is a partner in the Skate Park which is to be set up at the beach, next to the old Police Station.

There is a dire need for facilities for youth culture in Hout Bay. The skatepark is a place for healthy activity, socializing and environmental education as part of youth developing sustainable lifestyles.

The skatepark has become extremely valuable in giving youth positive outlets for their energy, particularly as it is well-managed, safe and accessible to those without money in their pocket.

 Activities could include:

·         A recycling depot for collecting materials for fund raising, craft making and bioddiesel (old cooking oil). It is envisaged that bringing recyclable materials or collecting litter could be a form of payment for use of the skatepark by the youth.

·         A wind generator to power lighting for evening use of the skatepark.

·         Promoting skating and cycling as healthy, environmentally friendly forms of transport.

·         Generating awareness around environmental issues through structured workshops and programs, environmentally themed murals, gardening (including herbs) and clean-ups of the area.

·         Any other activities relating to the environment that flow from the youth’s interests, or which are possible from resources at hand or opportunities which arise.

These potential activities are dependant on the availability of funding and people to facilitate them (either as volunteers or professionals).
