The ‘SA EnviroChallenge’
Globally and in South Africa,
electricity and water are becoming increasingly scarce
and expensive, causing financial hardship and major
environmental problems. Our national electricity grid is
teetering on the brink. The dramatic effects of climate
change are beginning to be felt.
The SA EnviroChallenge aims to help
address these issues, through a very simple but
widespread intervention, namely the installation of 500
000 water and power-saving showerheads across South
Africa. The benefits of this initiative will be
-
One million South Africans
saving money and
making a difference
-
Over
one million tonnes of
carbon emissions
being saved annually (equivalent to
over 300 000 cars being permanently taken off the
road, and equivalent to the savings from 400 000
domestic solar geysers)
-
Over
one million megaWatt hours
saved across South Africa annually
(equivalent to the power produced by Koeberg in 5
weeks, or enough electricity to power 350 000
average South African homes for a year).
-
Water saved is the equivalent of over
one million swimming pools
full saved annually (39 billion litres),
sufficient to fill Cape Town’s Steenbras Dam
We have researched the global market in
the area of water and energy-saving devices, and have
sourced what we believe are the most cost-effective,
top-quality solutions in this area, appropriate to the
South African market.
|
Water saving showerheads can
be up to 75 times more cost effective in
terms of saving electricity than a solar
geyser system, with a return on investment
of as little as one to two months. |

We believe that all showerheads in South
Africa should flow at less than 9.5 litres per minute (LPM)
as is mandatory in the USA (and is a City of Cape Town
bylaw), whilst still giving an invigorating, powerful
shower.
Many standard showerheads in South
Africa have flow rates of over 20 LPM, an enormous cost
in both resources and money. The resulting financial and
environmental savings are truly dramatic.
For example, the simple action of
replacing a single household showerhead that flows at
18LPM with an eco showerhead at 8 LPM, will create
annual
savings by
the homeowner of approximately"
-
R3000 at
current
utility
rates, with power and water costs set to escalate
further in the near future
-
2
tonnes of carbon emissions (equivalent to avoiding
driving your car for over 12 000 km each year)
-
2
megaWatt hours of electricity (one half of the
annual average South African household electricity
consumption)
-
1
tonne of coal
-
90
000 litres of water (enough to fill 3 domestic
swimming pools, which is 100% of the annual average
South African’s officially estimated
domestic water requirement, @ 250 litres per person per
day)
An additional benefit will be helping to
prevent overwhelming waterway and groundwater pollution
from our overstressed waste-water treatment works.
Eternally Solar invites your company to
take up the SA EnviroChallenge. We are encouraging all
companies to promote the benefits of the Challenge to
clients or by supporting staff in the purchase and
installation of water and power-saving showerheads. This
will be a lasting and significant gesture in these
uncertain times.
-
a
gift to your staff which will assist them
financially
-
a
gift to your company in helping to achieve social
and sustainability targets
-
a
gift to all future generations in South Africa and
beyond, through the dramatic environmental benefits
Be a Part of this Uniquely
South African Initiative
Every installation of a water and power-saving
showerhead will help to achieve the goal.
