Envirochild Greening Hout Bay

Sentinal Primary School

Donovan van der Heyden and his youth group, the Hout Bay Dolphins would like to create gardens at the Sentinal Primary School in Hangberg.

Donovan received first prize in the ‘Pam Golding Gardens of Pride Competition’ in 2006 for his garden. This has had a domino effect on his community, inspiring neighbours to plant up their gardens too.

The Sentinal Primary School garden project is his current project.

Donovan wants to create a succulent garden using indigenous plants that are water-wise, by manipulating local rocks.

Num num bushes are to be planted along the border for security.

An HIV ‘Garden of Hope’ will be planted in full view of the public along the main road.

A corporate garden will be planted next to the Principal’s office to honour educators.

The main aim is to turn this into an Environmental project and create awareness among the learners, as well as hosting a recycling depot at the school.

The church in Valley road has offered to sponsor a tunnel.

The HB ‘Lions’ will sponsor a mosaic workshop as a wall at the entrance covered in mosaics is to be built.

The problems faced are vandalism, lack of transport to convey soil, compost and plants and building materials needed.

The Greening HB team met at the YMCA to see site and viability of expanding the veg gardens to create more sustainable produce.

There currently exists a garden approx. 10 x 10 m wide, produce is shared among Coastcare workers and divided between 2 crèches in the area.

Problems faced are:

a) Lack of water in summer, in winter a mountain spring/well nearby is abundant with water

b) Theft of produce

Awaiting information from Ashley (the caretaker of YMCA) to speak to Trustees - Lewellyn Syce- to formalise the use of land for food garden.

Land higher up on the mountain is being viewed.

Koos from Coastcare will co-ordinate the maintenance of garden, especially the delivery of compost arranged by Helena.

Greening HB team will investigate expanding the food garden and training unemployed people from IY to grow food.

More data is needed on black water purification systems (Danie) as approx 22 kl / day system can be delivered in a containerised version estimated cost R 150 k.
