In 2007, local Hout Bay doctor Johnny
Anderton, built an entirely EarthBag project house in
Masiphumele for Lisa and Sheperd.

The simple foundations
Walls going up – a difficult job in a very confined
space

Window and door forms temporarily in place

Electrical installation – very easy to fit, no chasing!

Construction of a lintel – similar approach is taken if
a ring beam is specified

Rafters on

Starting to plaster

Scratch coat complete

Windows and door installed

The completed house with organic vegetable garden and
solar geyser

Lisa and Shepherd have now moved into their new home.
They have proven the thermal benefits of Earthbag
building. They have had no need for their heater
throughout a Cape winter! And they will be cool and
comfortable in the height of summer.

Architecture Faculty of the University of Nottingham
recently came out and built
this preschool for the township of Jouberton near
Klerksdorp. Part of the building was done in Earthbags,
the whole rear wall and side walls, as they wanted to
incorporate some sustainable aspects to the project
construction.
